Parent ToolKit:  What to Do When Kids Get "Textual"

Just when you thought you'd mastered new millennial slang, a relatively new catch phrase; “texual harassment;” has begun to permeate society.  What is textual harassment?  I’m glad you asked!  The Urban Dictionary defines this act as:   To be constantly texted, im'd or msg'd by an unwanted person.   Moreover, it’s the sending of non-stop threatening, obscene or unwanted messages.

But the reality is that while textual harassment is a technique employed by unwanted persons like school bullies and even stalkers, 1 in 4 teens and ‘tweens in a relationship say they have been called names, harassed or put down by their boyfriend through the sending of non-stop threatening, obscene cell phone texts, instant messages or other means of digital communication.  Even more alarming, is the propensity for this type of behavior to escalate to physical violence.
Digital communication is an integral part of girls’ lives and this fairly unchartered digital space has created new challenges for them as they start to experience intimate relationships. Unfortunately, dating abuse in the digital world is increasingly becoming a serious problem unique to the “millennial” generation of teens and ‘tweens.

Four 16 year old girls shared that each of them had been victims of textual harassment at one time.
"It was with my boyfriend. We were in this huge fight and he was saying rude comments and we were breaking up at the time and he was just going on and on.. And I told him I can't do this,” said one teenager.

This girl, who we'll call Erin, showed us one of many text messages her angry ex-boyfriend sent her.

This one says:
“When i hear your voice, my ears start bleeding. I hate you so much. Don't ever talk to me you”...

She's not alone. According to a recent study by the U.S. Justice Department 23 percent of stalking or harassment happens via text messages.

One teen reported that a middle school boyfriend constantly texted her about her whereabouts – requiring her to confirm her location by texting back a picture of her location and even made her feel guilty for spending time with friends and family rather than with him.  It is important for parents to recognize that this is a big way that abusers can monitor or control every second of their daughter’s day.

So what do you do-- as a parent-- to keep your child from becoming a victim of textual harassment?
Educate your daughter about textual harassment so that she is aware of the inappropriate nature of such behavior.  Disable text functionality from her cell phone or monitor your cell phone bills to observe the frequency with which she receives repeat texts from the same number to her phone.  Ask her for her phone periodically so that you may check the messages and voicemail to ensure her safety.  Utilize parental controls available through email services and social networking sites like FaceBook and MySpace, so that you may be aware of her messaging traffic.

Some critics say that these measures equate to spying.  Advocates assert that parents would not want their children interacting in the offline world with a negative influence, and until girls learn the judgment and have the maturity and social skills to protect themselves, it’s not about privacy or spying, it’s about protection and good parenting.
